Africa-Press – Cape verde. The producers of cheese from Planalto Norte, Porto Novo, Santo Antão, admitted today that they are aware of the interest of foreign companies in importing this product, whose quality is recognized beyond borders.
The spokesperson for the producers, Marciano Guilherme, told Inforpress that there is indeed interest from foreign companies, namely from Switzerland and Italy, who have already expressed their desire to import the cheese produced in Planalto Norte for the European market.
The cheese produced in Planalto Norte, classified by the Slow Food Foundation (Italy) as “world heritage of taste” and as “the best in West Africa”, was awarded the “Slow Cheese Award” in 2017 during the world fair of taste, in Italy.
However, in order to export the fresh and cured cheese, the producers say that it will be necessary to obtain certification, a condition for these products to be able to compete in international markets.
In addition to certification, the cheese producers also intend to display the seal of origin for genuine products from Santo Antão.
The president of the Associação Luz Verde do Norte, Maduino Lima, said that cheese certification will require a lot from producers, especially a commitment to improving quality.
This association has already operationalized the cheese factory in Chã de Feijoal, which has allowed for higher quality production, said the official, who said the factory was built with the much-desired certification in mind.
In 2022, livestock farmers in the Planalto Norte region benefited from the technical assistance program launched by the Institute for Quality Management and Intellectual Property (IGQPI).
During one of his visits to the Planalto Norte region, the Prime Minister said that the cheese produced in this area of the municipality of Porto Novo has “quality to compete anywhere in the world”.
