PAICV asks the Government for clarification on the possible integration of Cape Verde into NATO

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The PAICV expressed concern today about the possibility of greater rapprochement and eventual integration of Cape Verde into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), following statements by the Prime Minister of Portugal on the matter.

The announcement was made within the scope of the VII Cape Verde-Portugal Summit, in the context of the official visit of the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, to the country.

At a press conference, the leader of the PAICV, Rui Semedo, argued that for the party this coincidence suggests a prior articulation between the two heads of government, which raises doubts about negotiations taking place without the due knowledge of Cape Verdeans.

“This coincidence leads us to believe that the announcement was made with due coordination and coordination between the heads of executives of the respective countries. Taking into account that this information took all Cape Verdeans by surprise, because it was not shared in the country beforehand , the PAICV today addressed a letter to the Prime Minister (…)”.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the president of the PAICV requested clarification on possible negotiations related to a NATO integration agreement and warned about issues of national sovereignty.

“It is worth remembering that Cape Verde is a Democratic State of Law that is governed by the rule of law and that has as its reference its Magna Carta, which establishes the guidelines for our foreign policy and relations with international organizations and bodies”.

The party recalls that the Constitution of the Republic of Cape Verde, in article 11, number 4, establishes that “the State of Cape Verde refuses the installation of foreign military bases in its territory”.

For the PAICV, it is essential to know whether a process of joining a military pact was in fact initiated “without anyone being heard, without an internal discussion with society and political actors and without comprehensive and in-depth information to the locals.” “Verdians”.

The political formation defends that Cape Verde, as a Democratic State of Law, must respect the principles of its Constitution and established foreign policy.

“The Prime Minister therefore owes us a clear explanation of what is being negotiated with foreign entities in terms of sovereignty, without the knowledge of Cape Verdeans.”

The PAICV expects a “full” clarification from the Government.

“Concerned about these latest developments, the PAICV hopes that the situation will be duly and fully clarified for the peace of mind of Cape Verdeans who are always zealous about the values of sovereignty, peace, good neighborliness, stability and friendship between peoples.”

Among the main results of the VII Cape Verde – Portugal Summit, the head of the Cape Verdean government stated that as a member of the EU and NATO, Portugal is a special partner for: Deepening the Special Partnership with the EU; the Tailored Partnership Programme between Cape Verde and NATO and the Integration of CV as a partner of the European Peace Facility.
