Africa-Press – Cape verde. Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva announced today in Parliament the reinforcement of the support program for the regularization of student debts at universities, as well as a housing program for displaced university students.

“Recognizing that many university students are not certified due to tuition debts with universities, due to their parents’ financial difficulties, we will reinforce the program to support the regularization of students’ debts with universities through FICASE”, said the Head of Government at the opening of the debate.

Ulisses Correia e Silva also announced a program to support housing for university students studying outside their usual areas of residence.

“Also for young university students, a program will be launched to offer rental housing to young people who study outside their usual areas of residence,” he added.

Still in his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted that in the economic field, between 2016 and 2019, the Cape Verdean economy grew at an annual average five times greater than the average in the period 2009-2015, despite severe crises.

He also recalled that, in 2020, economic growth fell drastically by 20.8% due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, increasing unemployment and poverty.

However, it highlighted the “spectacular recovery” in the following years, with growth of 6.8% in 2021 and 15.8% in 2022 and continued growth in 2023 and 2024, above the average for sub-Saharan African countries.

The Governor also mentioned that the policies implemented made it possible to reduce unemployment to 10.3% and poverty to 24.7% in 2023, although he recognizes that the country still has 10% of people living in unemployment, around 25% in absolute poverty and 2.3% in extreme poverty.

However, he assured that the Government is committed to further reducing unemployment and absolute poverty and eliminating extreme poverty.

The Prime Minister also highlighted measures taken to mitigate the impact of inflation, the positive impact of Bolsa Família, and measures to reduce education and health costs.
