Cape Verde will Have, for the First Time, a National Infrastructure Plan

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The announcement was made today by the Minister of Infrastructure, Spatial Planning and Housing, Victor Coutinho, during his speech in Parliament.

“I am proud to announce that, for the first time in the history of our country, Cape Verde will have its own National Infrastructure Plan. The public tender for the preparation of the National Infrastructure Plan will be launched this month, with funding from the World Bank and ECOWAS”, he said.

According to the minister, the plan will be a “strategic investment map for the next 20 years, with a vision oriented towards a prosperous future, modern, green and resilient infrastructures, and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals”.

“The Plan will identify strategic infrastructures, make the technical and financial dimensioning adjusted to a timeline and indicate alternative sources of financing. We want a participatory Plan, where all Cape Verdeans, all parties and civil society on all islands have a voice”, he stressed.

In his speech, the minister also highlighted the progress made in the sector, such as the more than 200 kilometres of roads currently under construction or in the process of being rebuilt, mentioning interventions in Santiago, São Vicente, Porto Novo, Ribeira Grande, Brava, São Nicolau and Sal.

Regarding land use planning, Victor Coutinho mentioned the completion of the land registry in the centre of Mindelo and the progress of the same process on the island of Santiago, as well as the preparation of 18 detailed plans and five coastal development plans on several islands.

Regarding housing, the minister admitted that the housing deficit continues to be a challenge for thousands of families, but mentioned that more than 1,200 social housing units are under construction and around 200 are for young people, in addition to the fact that more than 650 families have been rehoused in Boa Vista and another 600 in Sal.
