Ship Liberdadi Goes for Repairs at Cabnave in São Vicente

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The fast ferry Liberdadi, which ran aground this Monday near the port of Praia, with 144 passengers on board, after interrupting the Praia/Fogo/Brava journey halfway through, is heading to São Vicente for repairs at the Cabnave shipyards.

According to the director of CV Interilhas (CVI), a team of divers has already detected the damage caused to the hull by the impact of the ship with the rocks, and the first interventions have been carried out, so it is necessary for the catamaran to travel to São Vicente to carry out the repairs, which may take time.

Fernando Brás said that strategies are currently being studied so that the ship, which is docked at the port of Praia, can reach São Vicente, whether by its own means or if towed for the appropriate technical intervention.

With the ship Liberdadi out of circulation, the Sotavento lines are deprived of maritime connections in the short term, as the other catamaran, Kriola, continues to receive repair work, as does the ship Praia d’Águada.

The CVI issued a statement in which it said it was considering all possibilities to find solutions that would allow connections on the Santiago/Fogo/Brava and Santiago/Maio routes to be ensured “as soon as possible”.

This case is the second maritime incident in the space of a week recorded in Cape Verde.

Last Monday, the 14th, the ship Nhô Padre Benjamim, from the company VerdeLines, sank off the coast of Preguiça Bay, when it was connecting the islands of Sal and São Nicolau.

The King Air 360 ER aircraft, recently acquired by the Government, is also inoperative, as it will undergo inspection and evaluation, due to an incident that caused the blades of one of the propellers to be dented on the 17th of this month, on its first emergency medical mission from the island of Boa Vista to Santiago.
