Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Statistics Institute (INE) reported today that the results for the 1st quarter of 2025 indicate that the consumer confidence indicator had a negative evolution when compared to the same period last year.
According to the INE, the aforementioned indicator continued with the same downward trend observed in the 4th quarter of 2024, that is, it evolved negatively, standing below the series average, highlighting a slight decrease in the confidence of Cape Verdean families.
According to the results of the 1st quarter of 2025, released by INE, the consumer confidence indicator revealed that for the families surveyed, in the last 12 months, the economic situation of their household evolved positively and the economic situation of the country evolved negatively, when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
In the opinion of those interviewed, in the last 12 months, both prices and unemployment increased, compared to the same period in 2024.
Regarding savings, the majority (64.6%) of those surveyed in the 1st quarter of 2025 considered that the country’s current economic situation does not allow for saving money. In the same quarter of the previous year, this percentage was 88.1%, which represents a decrease of 23.5 percentage points between the two periods.
The INE highlights that 10.5% of those interviewed said it was possible to save some money with the country’s current economic situation, whereas in the same quarter last year it was 9.3%, representing an increase of 1.2 p.p.
According to those interviewed, over the next 12 months, both the financial situation of families and the country’s economic situation are expected to evolve negatively, compared to the same quarter last year. For the families surveyed, both the prices of goods and services and unemployment are expected to decrease, compared to the same quarter last year.
The results provided by IBGE indicate that around 84.0 out of every 100 respondents said they were absolutely certain that they did not intend to buy a car in the next two years (compared to 94.3% in the same period last year), representing a decrease of 10.3 p.p.
Still in the 1st quarter of 2025, 18.2% of respondents stated that “probably yes”, they will build or buy a house (compared to 6.3% in the same period last year), representing an increase of 11.9 p.p.
A consumer survey is an effective tool for analyzing and interpreting the evolution of economic activity in the short term. The questions are qualitative in nature and reflect families’ opinions on the country’s economic and financial situation, as well as their own economic and financial situation, also assessing the families’ intention to save.
