Africa-Press – Cape verde. Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva acknowledged on Tuesday the constraints that exist in inter-island connections, highlighting that the critical situation on the islands of Brava and Maio has significantly affected the mobility and daily lives of the population.
“We have to acknowledge that we do have constraints, we have not yet managed to stabilize maritime connections and whenever there is a disruption we have problems. We cannot put Brava Island in trouble with connections, nor Maio in trouble with inter-island connections,” he admitted.
The head of government, who was speaking this morning at the presentation ceremony of the Praia Port Maritime Terminal Project, stressed that, despite the progress made, the country has not yet managed to satisfactorily stabilize connections between the islands.
According to Ulisses Correia e Silva, these two islands have very specific vulnerabilities due to their size and location, which makes mobility even more difficult.
“Brava, without a connection to Fogo, is a real problem, Maio, without a connection to Praia, is also a problem that directly affects people and the economy,” he said.
Ulisses Correia e Silva admitted that these failures end up generating distrust in the inter-island transport system at a national level, with a negative impact, even when there are positive indicators such as the increase in the number of passengers and cargo moved.
“It is enough to happen in Maio and on the island of Brava, then it is automatically exportable to the United States of America, we have a large community,” pointed out the Prime Minister who said that although the system is working, it creates a sense of crisis.
In view of this scenario, he assured that the Government is committed to overcoming this phase and resolving the problems affecting the connections, namely breakdowns, maintenance and other disruptions, ensuring that these failures should be addressed with solutions that guarantee the regularity of the service.
For the head of government, it is essential to ensure that all the islands are fully integrated into the national transport system.
On Monday the 16th, dozens of Bravens took to the streets of the city of Nova Sintra to demonstrate and draw the government’s attention to the deficient situation of maritime transport to and from the island.
In the same vein, businesspeople from the island of Maio are considering organizing a demonstration for the 28th of June to demand more predictability and regularity in transport, highlighting the losses caused by the successive cancellations of flights and the uncertainty in maritime transport.
