Storm in São Vicente ENAPOR Confirms Port Fee Exemption

Africa-Press – Cape verde. ENAPOR – Ports of Cape Verde announced a set of extraordinary measures to support the island of São Vicente, following the state of public calamity declared by the government following the severe weather on August 11th that affected the islands of São Vicente, São Nicolau, and Santo Antão. These decisions implement and implement measures already announced by the government, aiming to alleviate the impacts of the disaster and facilitate the flow of essential goods to the population.

According to the Ports of Cape Verde Administration, all donations sent by sea—domestic or international—are exempt from port fees, provided that Customs confirms the nature of the goods and their destination for solidarity purposes.

At the same time, and considering that many operators and traders have lost their warehouses or are unable to collect goods due to the precarious condition of the roads, the company approved the extension of the free container storage period at Porto Grande to 30 days, a measure that seeks to provide greater leeway for those directly affected.

The exemptions and concessions will be in effect for the next three months and are part of the national disaster response effort. ENAPOR emphasizes that these actions aim not only to support operators and traders but also to ensure that donated goods reach the families and communities most in need quickly and efficiently.

The severe weather that hit the island on August 11th caused extensive damage in São Vicente, affecting road infrastructure, water, energy, and telecommunications networks, private homes, commercial establishments, and warehouses. According to official figures, at least 9 people lost their lives. Material damage is still being calculated. One person is still missing.

“In this particularly difficult time, we call on everyone to unite so that, together, we can support those most in need and contribute to the rapid recovery of São Vicente Island,” emphasizes ENAPOR, aligning itself with the solidarity effort already launched by the government, civil society, companies, and international partners.
