Archaeological Remains Found at São Roque Church Renovation

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cultural Heritage Institute (IPC) announced this Thursday, the 21st, that during the renovation work on the Church of São Roque in Rabil, on the island of Boa Vista, archaeological remains associated with human burials were identified, a common practice in Catholic churches of bygone eras.

According to the IPC, the discovery occurred during the excavation of trenches intended for the installation of the foundations that will support the church’s high choir.

“Given the heritage significance of the find and the building’s antiquity, archaeological monitoring of the intervention was immediately ensured, with the presence of an archaeologist from the Cultural Heritage Institute,” it reported.

The IPC added that, among the procedures already carried out, the initial assessment of the remains, monitoring the digging of the remaining trenches, and rigorous documentation of the findings stand out.

The renovation of the Church of São Roque began at the end of January and is scheduled for completion this year, representing an investment of 33 million escudos.

The project is part of the Rehabilitation, Requalification and Accessibility Program (PRRA), in its Axis IV – Enhancement of Historical, Cultural and Religious Heritage, being financed by the Government of Cape Verde and coordinated by the IPC, in partnership with Infraestruturas de Cabo Verde, in a structuring action of preservation and enhancement of the national religious and historical heritage.
