Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic today emphasized the importance of raising awareness for younger generations about the challenges of protecting marine resources, as patron of the UNESCO Ocean Decade Alliance.
José Maria Pereira Neves made these statements during the event “Mar Azul: Jornadas do Oceano” (Blue Sea: Ocean Journeys), which will run until tomorrow under the motto “Ocean Decade: Know, Live, Feel, Raise Awareness, and Protect.”
“It is important that younger generations are made aware, from the outset, of the richness of our oceans and the need for sustainable management of these resources. And that is why we must start, from a young age—because it’s at a young age that things get complicated—to raise awareness among children, adolescents, and young people about the importance of the ocean for an oceanic country like Cape Verde,” he explained.
President Neves also emphasized the need not only to understand existing resources and potential, but, above all, to ensure sustainable management of these resources.
During the event, Professor Lenilda Duarte, from the University of Santiago, presented what would then become the Decade of the Ocean and the Alliance.
She explained that the Decade of the Ocean and the Alliance was proclaimed by the UN in 2017 and had as its main objectives to mobilize the global community for sustainable ocean management.
She also added that it promotes discoveries, scientific research, and innovation and aims to develop an ocean transformation agenda that began in 2021 and is expected to last until 2030.
