Africa-Press – Cape verde. Approximately 130,000 students are enrolled for the start of the 2025/2026 school year, and preparations are proceeding as planned in every municipality in the country, the National Director of Education announced today.

Adriano Moreno, who made this revelation on the sidelines of an activity at the Portuguese Cultural Center to mark International Literacy Day, told the press that approximately 115,000 students are in grades one through twelve, 16,000 to 17,000 in preschool, and over two thousand in basic education for young adults.

He added, however, that these figures are provisional, given that educational institutions are still accepting applications.

“In all municipalities, preparations for the school year are proceeding as planned, including the municipalities of São Vicente, São Nicolau, and Santo Antão, where the storms of August 11th occurred,” the same source assured, adding that local teams “have been working hard” to ensure the school year begins “smoothly.”

When asked about the reforms, he responded that this year’s work had finished at the high school level, noting that elementary school had already been completed.

“We will evaluate the high school reform; we are now working on both sides to level the playing field and ensure quality education,” Adriano Moreno noted.

According to him, the service he directs is working on preschool to “perfectly universalize this sector” with the introduction of the Priority Educational Reform Support Program.

This should also include the reform of Basic Education for Young People and Adults, in order to allow the country to have “a reformed education system from the bottom up” and the “much-desired education comparable to the most advanced countries.”

Regarding the teaching staff, she asserted that the transfer list has already been published and new placements are currently being made.

She hopes, however, that teachers will be in their municipalities within this week so that classes can begin on Monday the 15th.

The National Director of Education hopes the school year will begin smoothly.

“Human Resources services are working hard to place teachers; this year, few teachers have been transferred compared to previous years,” Moreno noted, convinced that this presupposes there will be fewer teachers to be reassigned.

This, she emphasized, “gives us comfort that we will not have a shortage of teachers at the beginning of the school year and that everyone will be in their respective municipalities.”

According to the Education official, sometimes people are placed and have some difficulty getting to the various municipalities.

He also said he believes the new school year will begin “without disruption, despite threats from some teachers’ unions” who are contesting the publication of the transition list, as part of the new Career, Function, and Remuneration Plan (PCFR).

The National Director of Education does not expect any difficulties with the start of classes because, in his words, the published transition list reveals “a significant salary increase, never seen in Cape Verde—a 16% increase for teachers.”

In a process like this, he commented, involving over seven thousand people, “there may be one or two teachers who feel wronged.”

He admitted that teachers in this situation “have every legal right to express their dissatisfaction, and we are open to dialogue.”

“The Minister [of Education] recently met with all the unions so that, from a perspective of transparency and compliance with the law, we could address the cases that are addressable, but we cannot address all the demands of either the unions or the teachers,” warned Adriano Moreno.
