EU Support to Cape Verde Reaches €398 Million

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The current overall amount of European Union (EU) support for Cape Verde has increased to €398 million, a source from the EU delegation in Praia told Lusa today, following an increase announced Thursday in Brussels.

“Taking as a reference the amount announced in September 2024 in Praia (€301 million), there was an increase in the overall amount of EU investment and support for Cape Verde. The current overall amount is €398 million,” corresponding to €378 million from the Global Gateway initiative and €20 million from the new budget support, he said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on social media Thursday “more than €200 million in investment in renewable energy, ports, and digital infrastructure.”

This communication includes “a portion of the 300 million euros already announced for Cape Verde in 2024, as well as new investments that cover additions to port infrastructure and wind energy,” as well as the amount of budgetary support for 2025-27, the same source explained.

The EU also participates in other cooperation programs and projects in areas such as security (including maritime security), support for civil society, and regional programs (PALOP-TL, WASOP, and others) not included in this amount.

In recent days, the European Commission organized meetings with the heads of state and government of several African countries, namely Angola, South Africa, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Cape Verde, represented by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.

In a message on social media, the archipelago’s head of government said today that, “in addition to development cooperation,” the meeting with Ursula von der Leyen served to address “strategic issues such as maritime security, the blue economy, and renewable energy.”

“I thanked the European Union for its support following the natural disaster in August,” a storm that left nine dead on the island of São Vicente, “and requested the provision of emergency budgetary support for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure damaged and destroyed by the storm’s impact,” he concluded.
