Africa-Press – Cape verde. Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva announced this Tuesday support for the Solidarity Canteen and the creation of temporary, paid work for students, initiatives of the Academic Association of the University of Cape Verde.
Presided over the opening ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic year at the Uni-CV campus in Praia, the head of state outlined a set of measures aimed at strengthening university social initiatives, highlighting the Solidarity Canteen, an idea he considered “innovative” and with a “strong social impact.”
According to the head of the Executive, the space is designed to guarantee affordable meals for students with greater financial difficulties, with the students themselves directly involved in preparation and management.
The Prime Minister also stated that the Executive will also support increased production capacity and supply products to the canteen, reducing meal costs, as well as creating a network of partnerships with product suppliers.
“We will be supporting this project; it seems very interesting to us, forming several partnerships: the association, the students, the university, and the government,” he said, also envisioning contact with a network of partner companies.
In addition to the Cantina Solidária, Ulisses Correia e Silva announced the creation of a temporary, flexible, and paid work program for university students, with the goal, he explained, of providing supplementary income to young people facing financial difficulties.
The head of government said that the program will be implemented with the support of tax and financial incentives for participating companies, and that the public administration will also open opportunities for hiring students, particularly in areas such as document digitization and administrative services.
The prime minister clarified that these measures are part of the government’s commitment to equity and inclusion in higher education, strengthening university social action through scholarships, residences, canteens, and job opportunities.
“For the 2025-2026 academic year, we are awarding an additional 500 scholarships, in line with the goal of increasing higher education enrollment,” he said, highlighting the program’s importance in regularizing the academic system.
The opening ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic year was also attended by members of the government, the Uni-CV rectorate, faculty, and students.
