Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean Cancer Association (ACLCC) announced this Tuesday the launch of a series of free screenings for breast, cervical, and prostate cancer for residents of the municipalities of Praia and Santa Cruz.
These initiatives, carried out in partnership with the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), are part of the annual Pink October and Blue November campaigns, under the motto “Hope is our strength and unity is our cure” (Hope is our strength and unity is our cure).
At a press conference in Praia, ACLCC president Benvindo Lopes explained that the initiative aims to reinforce the importance of 2025 as the “Year of Cancer” and focus efforts on areas identified by health authorities as most in need.
“The neighborhoods targeted for screening are those identified by local health authorities as most in need,” emphasized Benvindo Lopes, emphasizing the importance of the Association reaching the most vulnerable populations.
Screening activities will begin on Thursday, the 24th, in the Águas das Funda region, followed by Bela Vista (November 7th), Safende (November 21st), and, in the second week of December, the municipality of Santa Cruz.
In addition to the screenings, the ACLCC plans to hold an awareness-raising march on November 15th on the importance of prevention and early diagnosis, and will also distribute 80 food baskets to cancer patients.
The event, normally held on the occasion of International Breast Cancer Awareness Day, celebrated in October, will also be marked by a central event on October 31st.
Cancer has remained the second leading cause of death in Cape Verde for several years and is showing increasing incidence. It is also responsible for a high number of medical evacuations abroad, with “incalculable costs” for the country and families.
