Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cape Verde stated on Tuesday, the 21st, in Ribeira Brava, that the United Nations is available to identify areas that can contribute to the development of São Nicolau.
Patrícia Portela de Souza, speaking following a dialogue on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda with the educational community of Tarrafal de São Nicolau, highlighted both the challenges and opportunities existing in the region.
“The economic opportunities, the human talent that São Nicolau has, which often ends up migrating, can also be leveraged locally and on other islands. Our role is to see how the United Nations system can further support the development of this island,” she stated.
She explained that 20 UN agencies, funds, and programs currently work with the country, focusing on supporting sustainable development, social inclusion, the economy, and population empowerment.
Regarding the role of Cape Verdean youth in achieving the SDGs, the representative emphasized that the future belongs to young people and children, which is why they began the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the United Nations by talking to them.
According to her, the goal is to listen to their dreams and aspirations and work to create more opportunities for everyone, regardless of where they live.
The Resident Coordinator described the relationship between Cape Verde and the United Nations as “one of trust, respect, and cooperation,” emphasizing that the archipelago has always demonstrated “a strong commitment” to multilateralism and peace.
“Even before independence, during the period of self-determination, the United Nations already supported Cape Verde. Today, we continue this mission, with a focus on sustainable development,” she recalled.
São Nicolau Island still hosts the beginning of the celebrations for United Nations Week in Cape Verde, under the motto “We are better together.”
According to a note sent to Inforpress, the event marks three historical milestones: the 80th anniversary of the UN, the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence, and the 50th anniversary of the United Nations’ presence in the country.
The celebrations are being held in partnership with the municipal councils of Tarrafal and Ribeira Brava and aim to reinforce the central message of the United Nations on its eightieth anniversary: to renew hope, strengthen cooperation, and act together for a more peaceful, just, and sustainable future.
