Consumer Confidence Stays High Despite Negative Trend

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Consumer Confidence Indicator registered a negative evolution in the third quarter of 2025 compared to 2024, but maintained an upward trend, remaining above the series average, according to data released this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The data reveals a slight increase in the confidence of Cape Verdean families, despite the perception of deterioration in some economic conditions in the country.

In the last 12 months, the families surveyed considered that the economic situation of their household evolved positively, while the national economic situation showed a negative evolution compared to the same period last year.

Respondents also indicated a perception of falling prices and unemployment compared to 2024.

Regarding the economy, 96.5 percent (%) of respondents said that the current economic situation in the country does not save money, an increase of 4.1 percentage points compared to the same quarter of 2024.

Only 3.2% said they were able to save, compared to 6.9% in the same period last year. Regarding future expectations, families project a deterioration in both their financial situation and the national economy over the next 12 months.

At the same time, they believe prices may decrease, but they foresee an increase in unemployment.

In terms of consumption intentions, 92.8% of respondents stated they do not intend to buy a car in the next two years, slightly below the 93.5% recorded in the third quarter of 2024.

However, the intention to buy or build a house fell from 3.4% to 1.0%, a reduction of 2.4 percentage points.

The survey, conducted by the INE’s Economic Survey Service, covers the islands of Santiago (Praia and Santa Catarina), São Vicente, and Sal, with data collection taking place in the first half of the end of each quarter.

The Consumer Confidence Indicator is calculated from the simple arithmetic average of responses regarding families’ perceptions of their financial situation, the country’s economy, unemployment, and the current economic situation of their household, presented as three-term moving averages.
