Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Prime Minister announced this Friday a set of protection and response measures aimed at compensating the population of Tarrafal, São Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Catarina, following the extensive damage caused by last week’s torrential rains.
“As a result, the Government has approved a set of protection and response measures with the allocation of Emergency Solidarity Income, amounting to 30,000 escudos per month, for a period of three months, to compensate for the loss of income resulting from the interruption of economic activity and income-generating activity,” said Ulisses Correia e Silva in a communication to the nation.
The head of government indicated that the measures will be financed with resources from the National Emergency Fund and the Sovereign Emergency Fund, as well as through the support of development partners.
According to Ulisses Correia e Silva, the measures to support the resumption of economic and income-generating activity include the granting of non-repayable financial subsidies and interest rate subsidies and state guarantees on financing.
The Prime Minister also guaranteed the easing of tax and social security burdens for affected companies and the exceptional advancement of the sugarcane industrialization period for the production of aguardente (a type of Brazilian rum) to December 1, 2025.
“Financial support will be granted to the owners or legal possessors of vehicles damaged as a result of the impacts of the torrential rains, under terms to be established by a joint decree of the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Internal Administration,” he continued.
The government, he stressed, will support the financing of actions to protect economic activity and the infrastructure investment program, using resources from the National Emergency Fund and the Sovereign Emergency Fund, and with the support of contributions from development partners.
In his statement, Ulisses Correia e Silva said that preliminary assessments point to high losses, particularly affecting farmers and ranchers.
On November 13th and 14th, Cape Verde experienced extreme weather events, particularly affecting the municipalities of Tarrafal, São Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Catarina, impacting the river basins located between Santa Catarina and São Salvador do Mundo.
In response to this situation, Ulisses Correia e Silva emphasized that road clearing and cleaning operations are underway to restore normal mobility and circulation of vehicles and people.
“Teams from MIOTH and MAA, in coordination with the municipal councils, have begun assessing the losses and damage to economic activity and infrastructure destruction on the ground. These actions are fundamental to intervening effectively and efficiently in protecting the economic well-being of those affected and in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of infrastructure,” he stated.
Finally, the Prime Minister expressed his solidarity with all those whose possessions, businesses, properties, and homes were affected by the force of nature.
