The Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries (MCIC), through the National Center for Art, Crafts and Design (CNAD), announces that it will recognize the creativity of the people with the awarding of the KAKOY Prize – Artisanal Carnival 2026. This prize will be awarded to the spontaneous Carnival of Mindelo.

According to the same source, this annual prize aims to stimulate the spontaneous Carnival, which over the years has become one of the most striking and differentiating elements of the Mindelo Carnival.

“It is a celebration of imagination, originality and the unique ability that each reveler has to reinvent themselves and surprise,” it points out.

On Tuesday, February 17th, between 5 pm and 7 pm, along the route of the official groups on Rua de Lisboa, the performance of the groups and individual participants who stand out for the creativity and authenticity of their creations will be evaluated.

The MCIC (Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries) highlights that the name KAKOY pays homage to an emblematic figure of the Mindelo Carnival, who is part of the collective memory of the people of São Vicente.

The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, the 18th, at 2:30 PM, at the Palanque on Rua de Lisboa.

In the group category, first place will receive 40,000 cruzeiros, second place 30,000 cruzeiros, and third place 20,000 cruzeiros.

In the individual category, first place will receive 20,000 cruzeiros, second place 15,000, and third place 10,000 cruzeiros.

The same source states that this is a government initiative, through the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, which reinforces the appreciation of our cultural identity and the creative force of the São Vicente Carnival.

Brazilian Ministry of Culture Reinforces Funding for Carnival 2026

The Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries announced that this year, funding, made possible by the Tourism Fund, has received an increase of 30% to 50%.

The MCIC also informed that all groups and municipalities that received resources through the Public Notice have already received the full amount. According to the MCIC, São Vicente, São Nicolau (Ribeira Brava) and Praia received 50% of the amount at the end of October 2025, while the groups from Sal received 100% of the funding in October 2025.
