Africa-Press – Cape verde. Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva will preside over the presentation of the second phase of the expansion and modernization project for the Port of Porto Novo and the launch of the respective international tender on March 1st.
According to a statement from Enapor – Ports of Cape Verde, in addition to the public presentation of the project, the event will also include the launch of the international pre-qualification tender for the selection of the contractor for the design, engineering, and execution of the work.
For Enapor, the event constitutes “another step in the modernization of the national port infrastructure and in strengthening the connectivity and economic development of the country.”
The expansion and modernization works at the Port of Porto Novo are expected to represent an investment of around €42 million, financed by the European Union through the Global Gateway initiative.
Inaugurated in 1962, the port of Porto Novo has three quays measuring 45, 115, and 135 meters respectively, and is expected to be extended by another 150 meters to accommodate larger vessels, notably cruise ships, up to 200 meters in length.
This port, built in 1962, was remodeled in 2013, with works that allowed for the expansion of its berthing area, as well as its embankment, and the construction of a building for the modern maritime terminal, equipped with escalators.
The European Union ambassador, Sylvie Millot, on her first visit to Santo Antão in November, highlighted the fact that the European Union is “a reliable partner” for this island, referring to the financing of the port’s expansion and modernization works within the framework of the Global Gateway initiative.
