Africa-Press – Cape verde. The new PAICV president, Rui Semedo, officially sworn in yesterday, during the closing of the XVII Congress, held in Praia, promised to work to keep alive the flame of freedom and democracy, “in a moment of great complexity for the country”. Equally, he committed himself to developing “the great party”.

After receiving “symbolically the leadership sash” of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) from the outgoing leader, Janira Hopffer Almada, Rui Semedo placed the emphasis on an innovative, present party, incorporating the values of modernity, open to society and promoter of a democratic culture, geared towards an intense national dialogue.

This is due to the understanding that these strategies will contribute to overcoming the shortcomings and transforming the political debate into a strategic resource for the development of Cape Verde.

The new PAICV president classified the congress as “very important” and “a great moment” for sharing ideals, proposals, contributions, feelings and strengths, which resulted in the election of national bodies, based “on a great balance”, integrative lists , both in terms of male/female and in terms of age, in order to work to influence national policy.

Stronger The Congress, he says, allowed the PAICV to become stronger, “at a time when Cape Verde is facing great challenges”, convinced that the party will be able to achieve the goals advocated in the sphere of central power and municipal power. .

Considering that Cape Verde is going through difficult times, aggravated by challenges caused by the crisis and by the “inadequate policy at the current moment, with an extraordinary rise in prices of essential products with a clear decrease in purchasing power” and worsening unemployment, Rui Semedo asked everyone to fight waste and internal insecurity.

Overcoming the crisis, relaunching the economy, minimizing difficulties, protecting the most vulnerable, eliminating unnecessary expenses were identified by Rui Semedo as major challenges for Cape Verde to overcome food and energy insecurity, through storage logistics and increased national production. .

Equal treatment of all Cape Verdeans to avoid attacks on freedom and democracy, and the promotion of employment, health, as well as the fight against regional and social asymmetries and decent housing were also mentioned by Rui Semedo as assertive policies. , which the country lacks, for the well-being of its children.

Rui Semedo succeeded Janira Hopffer Almada, who made the position available following the results of the April 2021 legislative elections, which dictated the victory of the Movement for Democracy (MpD).
