Africa-Press – Cape verde. Regarding Africa Day, the ambassador of Cape Verde to Brazil, José Pedro D´Oliveira – “Djopan” – defended that “humanity will only be able to dream of happiness from the day when there is decent food for all”. As he said, it is not for nothing that the slogan of this year’s celebration is “Food and nutrition sustainability”.
In an interview with the Brasília In Foco website, José Pedro D’Oliveira clarified that, contrary to a “reducing concept” of the continent, which even exists in Brazil, Africa enjoys “an enormous diversity of civilizations”.
“Imagine how almost impossible it is for any African to classify the Africa Day Celebration there on the continent. The African Union that brings together the 54 countries holds the political celebration at the continental level, but the festivities of each people or culture do not fit in such a linear classification as is thought on this side of the Atlantic ”, he explained.
There is no real approximation in the Africa/Brazil relationship
Asked, also, about how he sees the current relationship between Africa and Brazil, the diplomat revealed that he sees “an irrelevant relationship, taking into account the historical-cultural potential, as well as the great natural resources on both sides”.
It is necessary, as he said, to leave behind “legendary and mythological Africa, for Brazil and Brazilians”, and make way for “concrete Africa, the one that exists today and not that of four centuries ago”.
Strengthening of commercial relations
For example, he indicated, South/South trade relations, which have been talked about so much in recent decades, await bolder political decisions and more focused on a future of development, without intermediaries from other continents.
“Brazil has reached a level of industrial development, especially in Agribusiness, which can be very useful to African countries and these, in turn, have many unexplored resources that may interest Brazil to stop being dependent on regions located in the other. side of the world”, he exemplified.
Another example of cooperation, he pointed out, may be linked to the problem of fertilizers, “which could be obtained on the west coast of Africa, in bilateral negotiations with Brazil”.
Exemplary cooperation with Cape Verde
Despite greater historical links, and our belonging to the same Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), the ambassador considered that Cape Verde is no exception to this distanced reading of the continent.
However, he stressed that there is exemplary cooperation between the two countries, since independence, in several areas and that it will be reinforced with the resumption of “normality”, namely in terms of trade.
