Residents of the North zone angry with lack of water can return to the streets

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Residents of the northern part of Boa Vista are angry with the lack of water in the locality. As they say, they have been dependent on the water supply from the only fountain in the area for two weeks. If the situation does not change, they can return to the streets.

This situation comes about two weeks after the inauguration of the Fundo de Figueiras desalination unit, an investment of 60 million escudos from the Government, inaugurated by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.

At the time, the residents of João Galego even tried to stop the entourage of the prime minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, who was heading to Fundo de Figueiras, to preside over the aforementioned inauguration.

Critical situation”

Now, this weekend, two weeks after the inauguration, the residents say they are in a “critical” situation of lack of water, being dependent only on water from the fountain and claiming home connections.

“The water project has already been inaugurated by the Prime Minister, however there are areas where there are houses, including where I have a tourist-hotel enterprise, which were not covered with the water network that remained until the oldest part of the town”, said Marcelo Fortes, owner of a hotel in João Galego.

According to this operator, at the moment the establishment is practically closed, this is because if there is no way to transport water from farmers’ wells, which is also scarce, there is no water even for the hotel’s bathrooms.

costs and losses

Dario Andrade also explained that this is a situation that is affecting the entire North zone, where, on weekends, jars are lined up at the foot of the fountain to get water for their homes.

“There are elderly people who receive a social pension of five thousand escudos per month, they have to pay 20 escudos for five 25-liter water jars, and they still have to pay another 200 escudos for someone to take them home”, he said.

The same resident highlighted that, contrary to the information that the population would have to put meters at home so that they could have piped water at home, he certified that about 50% of the homes have the equipment, but that, even so, all the same.

“This is already a big expense. Because there is a lack of information that is a disgrace to what they do for the population of the North. Cabeça dos Tarafes already has water, Fundo Figueiras 5% of the population already has water and nothing in João Galego”, he said.

New manifestation in hypothesis

In turn, resident Barbara Pires recalled that next month it will be a year since the population of the North zone held a demonstration, precisely to demand quality water pipes in the area, arguing that, until now, they continue to experience the same problems.

According to her, for about two weeks, the existing brackish water hole has been broken, so people are now forced to go to the fountain every day to get water.

Under his analysis, in addition to the time that is lost, it is something that constitutes a cost for the family in the locality of João Galego, and, therefore, he advanced that, if he does not resolve the situation, they can schedule another demonstration.
