Africa-Press – Cape verde. Sociologist Henrique Varela today considered that Cabo Verdean society needs to be more “empathetic” about the elderly situation and be aware of the importance and contribution they have made in the construction of the country.
In an interview with Inforpress, regarding the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is marked on June 15, Henrique Varela highlighted the importance of the institution of the date which, in his view, serves as a reflection on how the elderly have been treated, the actions taken and how can be strengthened in order to support, help and care for them in the moments they need most.
“We need to find out if the elderly are well integrated, fully included in the home where they live or in any other space where they may be living,” said the sociologist.
He pointed out that Cabo Verde in this matter “is well served”, justifying that the country does not have the culture of putting the elderly in shelters and usually the vast majority remain at home where it is under the care of family members.
