The president of the Association for the Integrated Development of Ribeira das Patas (ADIRP), Arlindo Delgado, guarantees that, in addition to the drought, the occurrence of winds at the time of flowering also conditioned the production of mangoes this year, but that, even so, the production was “reasonable”.
Ribeira das Patas, rich in the production of mangoes and citrus, is the agricultural valley most affected by the drought that has hit Porto Novo in recent years, since the water destined for agriculture comes only from springs, whose flows have been reducing annually.

This official praises the fact that the cultivation of mangoes is contributing this year to alleviate the difficulties of the population of Ribeira das Patas, as it is a source of income for “a significant part of families”.
Because, as he says, there are “many families” that at this time of year earn some income from the sale of mangoes, even at a low cost, due to the lack of a market.
It should be remembered that, due to the embargo to which agricultural products are subject in Santo Antão, due to the thousand-foot plague, the market for this product is restricted only to the islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente.
