The Mayor of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão, Orlando Delgado, promised, today, to take steps to repair the damage caused by the floods of rains recorded last weekend, especially on the access roads to the towns of Figueiral and Caibros. These areas were completely isolated.
“We are mobilizing means, namely machines so that, in a short space of time, people have access to these areas”, guaranteed Orlando Delgado in statements, this morning, to Rádio de Cabo Verde (RCV).
The mayor of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão admitted that in the municipality there are still many seasonal roads, which make the respective areas isolated during the rainy season.
“Unfortunately, in Ribeira Grande, we still have many roads along the riverbeds and when it rains people get stuck. Today, I have seen many people carry their bags on their backs because there are no alternatives,” he said.
Heavy rain over the weekend
It should be remembered that, last weekend, there was significant rainfall in the municipalities of Ribeira Grande and Paul, causing floods in the main valleys and tributaries of these municipalities.
However, it should be noted that much of the water still flows into the sea.
However, not all areas of the municipality of Ribeira Grande registered rainfall, such as Vale da Garça, Chã de Igreja, Cruzinha and Lagoa, considered the granary of Ribeira Grande. As the mayor concluded, these areas “are completely dry”.
