Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government of Cabo Verde will inject, until 2024, a total of three billion escudos in the national company, Cabo Verde Airlines, a period in which it expects to be able to solve the problem of stability of the company and to be reprivatized.
This decision came out of the meeting of the Council of Ministers, made public this Friday, by the Minister of Tourism and Transport, Carlos Santos, who said that the resolution was authorized by the Minister of Finance, as a representative of the State shareholder in Cabo Verde Airlines.
According to the official, during this period, the amount of 1 million escudos will be injected each year in order to “save again” TACV, as he understands that this company is an important and strategic part of the country’s development.
“In 2016, as you know, the Government saved TACV from bankruptcy, which was already pre-announced, having defined a restructuring framework. In 2021, after negotiations with the Icelandair partner and taking into account the situation caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the Government again decided to save the company”, he recalled.
second aircraft
“We are a country with a diaspora spread across the four corners of the world, and now after this pandemic we have realized that, without having a company, we are much more vulnerable with companies charging exorbitant prices”, acknowledged Carlos Santos, adding that the Government wants to bring a second aircraft to the country.
In the coming months, he needed, he wants to bring a second aircraft, because “it is not with a single plane that the company will be able to take off consistently, but it is not only with the Cape Verdean market that we will make TACV viable.” ”.
This, according to the official, is also in line with the tourism policy, which is the diversification of the sector, of supply, and for this, he defended that there should be a company that looks at the transport of tourists.
“ Repeat”
“And for all this, we want to retain this company, stabilize it, for when, as soon as there are calm waters in Cape Verde and in the whole world, we will be able to re-privatize this company and continue to serve the country”, he said.
For Carlos Santos, with this decision, the Government will be creating a predictable framework for all TACV partners, whether they are customers, suppliers, or shareholders, but also for the bank itself, which is the creditor.
“That’s why there is also this need for a clear, strong partnership between workers, shareholders, creditors, suppliers and customers, so that we can lift the company and get the company flying consistently”, he declared.
