Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Education recognized this Sunday the “distinctive” role played by teachers in the intellectual and social development of students and promised to continue working toward a more motivated teaching profession.
In a statement commemorating World Teachers’ Day, celebrated on October 5th, Minister Amadeu Cruz praised the “extraordinary” work of teachers in training and developing Cape Verdean professionals, whose impact is felt throughout society.
This work, he emphasized, translates into a high literacy rate among the population, “only explained by the exceptional zeal and dedication to the noble task of educating and teaching generations, always with a selfless spirit of mission.”
“It is important to emphasize that since 2016, the Government of Cape Verde has worked tirelessly to enhance the teaching profession, responsibly, seriously, and systematically resolving most of the outstanding issues and distortions in the teaching profession that have accumulated since 2008,” he emphasized.
He noted that more than 7,800 teachers have already benefited from an investment of over R$950,000, fulfilling the commitments made to teachers and the unions that represent them.
He also emphasized that the Teachers’ Position, Function, and Compensation Plan (PCFR) was recently approved and published, introducing a new pay scale and regularizing previously frozen promotions.
“Teachers began receiving their updated salaries last September. The Ministry of Education’s technical teams are already working to begin paying retroactive salaries, effective January 2025,” he added.
Amadeu Cruz also emphasized that the Ministry of Education is implementing the National Teacher Continuing Education System to further value and dignify the teaching profession.
He assured that the government is working to have a more motivated teaching force, recognizing the fundamental role teachers play in the ethical and civic education of students, in their intellectual and social development, and in shaping future citizens and professionals.
On this special day, he took the opportunity to wish all teachers a happy day and reinforced his commitment to tackling the challenges facing the education sector, promoting social peace and unity among all Cape Verdeans.
