Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The fishermen of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, in Porto Novo, Santo Anta\u0303o have been facing problems in preserving their fish, due to a breakdown in the production unit. It’s been six months without local ice, forcing fishermen to resort to the city of Porto Novo or Sa\u0303o Vicente to gain access to this essential asset for the activity.<\/p>\n

The warning is given by the president of the Fishermen’s Association of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, Isai\u0301as Pires, who asks “whoever has the right” to help the class solve the problem of fish conservation in the fishing community, which has been going on for six months.<\/p>\n

The ice production unit, inaugurated in 2015, stopped working and, insistently, fishermen have been asking for a solution to the problem of preserving fish in Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, one of the main fishing areas on the island of Santo Anta\u0303o.<\/p>\n

Long distances to find ice<\/p>\n

The leader of the Association of Fishermen of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo informed that the class has resorted to ice production units in the city of Porto Novo, around 50 kilometers away, and in Sa\u0303o Vicente, with all the resulting constraints.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the ice production unit has operated \u201cwith problems\u201d, producing only a third of its capacity, but it stopped operating six months ago to the dismay of fishermen, said this official.<\/p>\n

Government is still \u201cworking\u201d<\/p>\n

The Government guarantees that it is “working” to install a fishing complex in Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, which, among other infrastructures, will have a pier and a cold warehouse.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, during his visit to Tarrafal de Monte Trigo in June, announced the installation of the fishing complex in the locality, whose technical studies were already underway at that time.<\/p>\n

The head of government said on that occasion that the government intends to make “a strong bet” on fishing in Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, an area with “great potential” in this sector and where one of the most important fishing grounds in the country is located.<\/p>\n
