Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary General of the United Nations, Anto\u0301nio Guterres, considered, this Saturday, in Mindelo, that “justice” is needed so that countries like Cape Verde, which have done nothing for climate change, stop paying for them.<\/p>\n

The head of the United Nations (UN) was speaking following a meeting with the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, as part of the schedule for the passage of the Ocean Race through Sa\u0303o Vicente.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need justice so that those like Cape Verde who have done nothing for climate change stop paying for them\u201d, exhorted Guterres, for whom the country has shown a \u201cclimate interest in words and actions\u201d, described, for example, in the intention to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and investing in the blue economy.<\/p>\n

In this sense, Anto\u0301nio Guterres said he looked forward to the possibility of working with the Government and people of Cape Verde to \u201cbring this ambition to reality\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am more determined than ever to try to make 2023 a turning point for people and countries\u201d, he assured, indicating that he intends to promote peace and security, the SDGs, stability and fight the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

Asked if there is still no awareness of the richest countries to finance poorer countries affected by climate change, the secretary-general admitted that there is such awareness, although there is still “not enough effective action”.<\/p>\n

As an example of this lack of action, he pointed to the failure to unlock the six billion dollars per year from the most developed countries, which should have started in 2020, but so far has not happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a whole set of essential reforms to be carried out and the world has been slow to recognize it and even slower to implement it\u201d, he advocated.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, for his part, thanked the UN Secretary-General for his commitment to island states such as Cape Verde, which have been trying to increase their resilience in relation to climate change.<\/p>\n
