Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary General of the United Nations, Anto\u0301nio Guterres, said this Monday, 23, that as a Portuguese he has a \u201cdebt of gratitude\u201d towards Ami\u0301lcar Cabral, for what this National Hero of Cape Verde did for the democratization of his country.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Portuguese I have a debt of gratitude that I cannot forget in relation to Ami\u0301lcar Cabral and his contribution to the democratization of my own country [Portugal] and decolonization\u201d, said Guterres who is in Cape Verde to participate in the Summit of Oceanos that takes place in Mindelo.<\/p>\n

The Secretary General of the United Nations made this \u201crecognition\u201d on the sidelines of the meeting he held with the President of the Republic, Jose\u0301 Maria Neves Pala\u0301cio no Povo, in Sa\u0303o Vicente.<\/p>\n

Anto\u0301nio Guterres recalled that this is the centenary year of Ami\u0301lcar Cabral, \u201ca fundamental reference\u201d for the United Nations.<\/p>\n

Homage to Cape Verde<\/p>\n

After the meeting with the Cape Verdean PR, which lasted about 30 minutes, he said that the \u201cfundamental objective\u201d of the meeting was, on the part of the Secretary General of the United Nations, \u201cto pay homage\u201d to Cape Verde.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a country that is the victim of being an island state and of a deeply unfair international order in terms of finance and trade, and that is why I wanted to express to the President of the Republic the total solidarity of the United Nations with Cape Verde\u201d, concluded Anto\u0301nio Guterres .<\/p>\n

The leader of the United Nations also left the hope that the effort that Cape Verde has been making, namely in the protection of the oceans, as a \u201cgreat maritime State\u201d, will succeed and be \u201cdeeply rewarded\u201d by the international community as well.<\/p>\n
