Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) today highlighted the fact that Cape Verde has become the \u201csmallest nation to qualify for a World Cup\u201d in the sport following the victory, this afternoon, of the Cape Verdean basketball team over Costa of Ivory and the subsequent qualification for the 2023 World Cup.<\/p>\n

The FIBA \u200b\u200bwebsite states that, in addition to making history by qualifying for the first time for the World Cup, \u201cCape Verde is now also the smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup, beating the record previously set by Montenegro in the 2019 World Cup\u201d.<\/p>\n

The International Basketball Federation recalls that before Montenegro, at the time with a population of around 620,000, in 2006, the record belonged to Qatar, whose population was just under 1 million.<\/p>\n

Cape Verde small, Eddy Tavares big<\/p>\n

FIBA also points out that, despite Cape Verde\u2019s small size, its star player, Walter \u201cEddy\u201d Tavares, a 2 meter and 20 cm center, \u201cis far from being a small player\u201d, having been \u201carguably the best player in Cabo Verde in the qualifiers averaging 15.0 points, 12.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game before his decisive victory in World Cup qualification\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, according to FIBA, Cape Verde may not keep this record for long. Iceland (and its population of 347,101) could potentially break that record tonight if they beat Georgia by 4 or more points.<\/p>\n
