Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Clube Sportivo Mindelense won the 2nd Edition Chess Tournament in honor of Gabriel Borges, which ended yesterday afternoon in Sa\u0303o Vicente. The second and third places went to Gre\u0301mio Desportivo Amarante, the organizing club, with team B and A, respectively. Gre\u0301mio Desportivo Amarante and Associac\u0327a\u0303o de Chess de Sa\u0303o Vicente hope to attract young people and women to the tournament in the next edition, and are working to integrate and raise awareness among schools to make this possible. The only female presence was in the winning club.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, in Sa\u0303o Vicente, the 2nd Edition Chess Tournament in honor of Gabriel Borges, who was the eighth president of Gre\u0301mio Desportivo do Amarante and an activist, social cultural and sportsman, came to an end.<\/p>\n

The tournament organized by Gre\u0301mio Desportivo Amarante and the family of the deceased had the participation of five teams, including a youth team from the Salesiana school.<\/p>\n

Clube Sportivo Mindelense ended up winning the most points and winning the competition, followed by Gre\u0301mio Desportivo Amarante, with team B and A, who won, respectively, second and third place. The league table was completed with fourth place awarded to Clube Desportivo Falco\u0303es do Norte and fifth to Escola Salesiana de Artes e Ofi\u0301cios.<\/p>\n

Greater integration of young people<\/p>\n

In the end, heard by A NAC\u0327A\u0303O online, Yuran Miranda, referee and president of the Sa\u0303o Vicente Chess Association, congratulated the organization, stating that the tournament \u201cwent very well\u201d and applauded the fact that they invited the school to participate in this second edition. Miranda said that it was \u201crewarding\u201d to see the interaction between generations, between the youngest and most experienced in the sport, and praised the organization’s capacity for initiative.<\/p>\n

This person in charge believes that it is possible to attract more young people to the modality and that the basis of work and awareness of schools is good. In this sense, he stressed that the Sa\u0303o Vicente Chess Association is working in this direction, to “launch” chess in schools and that this tournament, with the inclusion of the Salesiana school, ended up serving as a “seed” that can bear fruit.<\/p>\n

Attract more women to the sport<\/p>\n

Likewise, he argues that it is necessary to work to attract more women to the sport, if we consider that the only female presence was at Clube Sportivo Mindelense, with only one player.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Chess, in Sa\u0303o Vicente, female participation is still very low\u201d, he lamented.<\/p>\n

That’s why he noticed that the Association he directs is also working on the greater inclusion of female athletes in the modality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have noticed that in Sal there are more women playing chess who come from schools and we are following the same model\u201d, he stressed.<\/p>\n

Who was Gabriel Borges<\/p>\n

Gabriel Borges, a unique and much loved figure on the island of Sa\u0303o Vicente, was a man of sport and culture, an activist. He was even linked to the theater, before independence, in the 50s, when Gre\u0301mio Desportivo do Amarante itself took the theater to the stage of E\u0301den Park<\/p>\n

Born on March 18, 1924, having died in 2017, aged 93, Gabriel Borges was the 8th President of Gre\u0301mio Desportivo Amarante, a club he helped found with Beto Fernandes, Evandro de Matos, among others. Having even been together with Evandro de Matos, they were the faces of the team that led the so-called modernization phase of Amarante today.<\/p>\n

Remember that Gre\u0301mio Desportivo Amarante was founded on June 2, 1936, currently comprising the modalities of Football, Chess and Handball.<\/p>\n\r\n
