Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verdean ceramic artist and sculptor Jacira da Conceic\u0327a\u0303o will open the \u201cTchom Bom\u201d exhibition on Saturday, 29th, at the Cape Verde Cultural Centre (CCCV) in Lisbon, as part of a project with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Jacira da Conceic\u0327a\u0303o, a native of Tarrafal, Santiago Island, and a resident in Portugal, explained that \u201cTchom Bom\u201d is a multicultural project of artistic research, interested in ceramics, cinema, and the relationships between traditional and contemporary art.<\/p>\n

According to her, the fieldwork related to the \u201cTchom Bom\u201d project allowed her to experience a return to Tarrafal, and an \u201cintimate contact\u201d with the master potters, Maria Varela, Mariazinha Semedo, Pascoalina Borges, and Isabel Semedo, among other \u201cwomen of clay\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our culture, ceramics are a women\u2019s practice. I returned as a woman, but also as an African artist in the diaspora, where overcoming and sacrifice are constant themes in my work. I returned to my essence, which is the sea, which is an island. I returned to learn, to observe, to understand, and to carry out my auto-ethnography as a Cape Verdean sculptor,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n
