Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>This Monday, May 1st, is Labor Day. Demonstrations by Cape Verdean workers are planned all over the country, demanding better wages and living conditions, in general, drawing attention to the various problems that affect Cape Verdean families.<\/p>\n

Several demonstrations are planned this Monday, May 1st, Worker’s Day, all over the country’s islands. The Union of Industry, Service, Commerce, Agriculture and Fishing (SISCAP) had already announced, last week, that workers will take to the streets in \u201ca sign of protest\u201d against the problems that affect the country.<\/p>\n

As already advanced in a press conference, Eliseu Tavares, trade unionist and coordinator of the Platform to Unite and Rescue the National Union of Workers of Cape Verde – Trade Union Central (PUR UNTC-CS), the demonstration aims to draw the government’s attention to the problems that arise \u201cannoyed\u201d Cape Verdean workers and families.<\/p>\n

This collective manifestation resulted from a meeting between the unions of several islands that were recently gathered in the city of Praia.<\/p>\n

Among the causes of protest that take Cape Verdean workers to the streets on this symbolic day of May 1 is the labor situation in Cape Verde with \u201charmful and worrying\u201d effects on the lives of families and the country in general.<\/p>\n

The loss of purchasing power, the increase in taxes, the exaggerated rise in the prices of essential goods and the rise in transport prices are some of the reasons that take workers to the streets on this 1st of May.<\/p>\n

On Praia, the gathering takes place at the Centro Social 1o de Maio, on the Farm, from 8:30 am.<\/p>\n

Porto Novo takes to the streets too<\/p>\n

Also in Porto Novo, a demonstration is scheduled for 10:00 am, to draw the Government’s attention to the need to update wages, which have not kept pace with inflation, causing great constraints to families.<\/p>\n

As Inforpress advances, the demonstration was called by the Free Union of Workers of Santo Anta\u0303o. The permanent secretary, Carlos Bartolomeu, informed that the march is to draw the attention of the municipalities of Santo Anta\u0303o and the Government to \u201cthe complicated situation\u201d in which workers on this island find themselves.<\/p>\n

In this regard, he appealed to the adherence of workers and their respective families, as well as civil society in general.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe demonstration aims to alert the Santo Anta\u0303o city councils and the Government to the complicated situation of workers, who are losing their purchasing power due to the non-updating of wages\u201d, explained the unionist.<\/p>\n

He warned of the \u201cvery difficult\u201d situation of the workers and the \u201cdifficulties\u201d that families on the island of Santo Anta\u0303o face.<\/p>\n
