Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The president of the Journalists Association of Cabo Verde (AJOC) argued that the President of the Republic, Jos\u00e9 Maria Neves, thinking about freedom of the press in the country meets the ideals defended by the class.<\/p>\n

Geremias Furtado expressed this position to the press at the end of a meeting with the Head of State, revealing that the AJOC\u2019s direction was motivated, aware that freedom of the press and the public interest will prevail in the process in which two journalists and their bodies have been constituted defendants by the Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office, in a case of alleged breach of the secrecy of justice.<\/p>\n

He said he was convinced that this fight requires more dialogue and talks, arguing that the law is dubious, which is why the AJOC calls for a \u201cfrank and enlightening\u201d debate, underlining the need for a revision of legislation to eliminate the Article 113 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.<\/p>\n

Furtado is concerned, because he understands that freedom of the press, \u201ca gain that Cabo Verde has achieved in recent times, is having a setback\u201d, which may open precedents for driving down investigative journalism with the indictments.<\/p>\n
