Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>This Wednesday, July 5th, Cape Verde celebrates 48 years as a free and independent country. It should be recalled that Independence was proclaimed on July 5, 1975, by the then president of the Popular National Assembly, Abi\u0301lio Duarte, now deceased, at Esta\u0301dio da Va\u0301rzea, in Cidade da Praia, at the time by the watchful eye and under the celebration of thousands of people.<\/p>\n

The city of Praia once again hosts the central act of the celebrations of the National Independence Day, 5th of July, with the usual Solemn Session taking place in the National Assembly, from 10 am, and the laying of flowers at the Ami\u0301lcar Cabral memorial, next to the National Library, an hour earlier.<\/p>\n

In fact, the President of the Republic marks this year the 48th anniversary of National Independence under the sign of recognition and appreciation of the historical, political, cultural and scientific contribution of personalities and institutions in the construction of the Cape Verdean State.<\/p>\n

The Presidency’s program of activities, to be carried out from July 5th to 13th, has as its high point, the decorations that praise achievements and their protagonists in several “fundamental fronts” for the country, in a total of 20 personalities, from different areas, of the country and diaspora, who will be awarded at the Presidential Palace at 5 pm.<\/p>\n

One of the recipients is Salim Ahmed Salim, Secretary General for many years of the former OAU \u2013 Organization of African Unity, a prominent personality in the fights for Pan-Africanism and African Unity, and, according to a note from the Presidency, a firm supporter of the political- diplomacy of Ami\u0301lcar Cabral.<\/p>\n

The National Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, INIDA, will also be honored for the “continuous and robust” intervention of professionals in the earth and environmental sciences, as well as Fernando Amarante Dias “Chando Graciosa”, who, with his work, essentially linked to the promotion of genuine funana\u0301, brought to the Cape Verdean musical panorama \u201ccompositions of great patrimonial and cultural value\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the program of the 5th of July celebrations, the Presidency also reserved space for national cinema, which has gained projection and recognition, in the country and across borders.<\/p>\n

Within this framework, films and documentaries will be shown with a common denominator: the woman at the center, as a producer or as the main actress.<\/p>\n
