Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The teacher, theater producer, associative agent and educator Daniel \u201cNhelas\u201d Monteiro died in Sa\u0303o Vicente, a victim of illness, at the age of 58. Nhelas was admitted to Hospital Baptista de Sousa. He was awarded the 2021 Me\u0301rito Teatral Prize, the most important award in Cape Verdean theatre, in recognition of his more than 30 years of contribution to the dynamization of the performing arts in Cape Verde. Daniel Monteiro was born in Santo Anta\u0303o, municipality of Porto Novo.<\/p>\n

In a note of regret, the Ministry of Culture recognized Nhelas as \u201canother soul dedicated to our culture and the performing arts\u201d<\/p>\n

“Our culture, our theatre, the performing arts are poorer with the physical disappearance of Nhelas” the note also reads.<\/p>\n

The Associac\u0327a\u0303o Arti\u0301stica e Cultural Mindelact highlights, in turn, the \u201crich path\u201d of Nhelas, who was for many years the leader of that association, a tireless leader, a cultural dynamist and with the \u201cmission\u201d of taking Mindelact to the entire archipelago .<\/p>\n

The Porto Novo City Council also praised and recalled the personality of Daniel Monteiro, for his \u201chelpful contribution as a reference professional in the municipality\u201d and paid homage to the work carried out by the \u201cson of Porto Novo\u201d for the theatre, Mindelact and the theatrical community and to the country.<\/p>\n

30 years of Mindelact, a lifetime dedicated to the performing arts<\/p>\n

Nhelas’ long path linked to theater began in 1995, with the holding of the first theater festival in Sa\u0303o Vicente. He was then head of the Frank Cavaquin group.<\/p>\n

A year later, in 1996, he participated as a founding member in the creation of the Mindelact Association and, immediately, joined the management bodies, in the first management team of this association.<\/p>\n

He was president of Mindelact for two terms. In 2021, unanimously and acclaim, he was chosen “Theatrical Merit Award”.<\/p>\n

On social media, regrets are accumulating over the passing of this \u201cgiant\u201d of Cape Verdean culture and Sa\u0303o Vicente society.<\/p>\n
