Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>24 years ago, an aviation accident killed 18 people in the Ribeira da Torre Valley, in Santo Anta\u0303o. The Coast Guard military \u201cdornier\u201d D4-CBC had taken off in Sa\u0303o Vicente towards the Ponta do Sol airfield, but poor visibility led to the aircraft crashing.<\/p>\n

The Armed Forces Dornier plane was on TACV flight 502 when the tragedy occurred, having taken off from Sa\u0303o Vicente airport with 16 passengers and two crew members on board bound for Ponta do Sol airfield, which since then has been closed to traffic for security reasons.<\/p>\n

The poor visibility, according to authorized sources in the matter, was identified as the cause of this tragedy, claiming that it prevented the landing and that the last contact between Commander Borges and the Control Tower in Sa\u0303o Vicente was recorded at 11:56, noting that would return to the island of Porto Grande due to landing difficulties.<\/p>\n

Biggest tragedy of Cape Verdean aviation<\/p>\n

The former colonel of the Armed Forces, Anto\u0301nio Carlos Tavares, popularly known as Sabu\u0301, and who at that time was the judge of the Military Court, recalled the event to Inforpress with \u201cgreat sadness and consternation\u201d.<\/p>\n

He refers to this brutal event as the most tragic in the entire history of Cape Verdean aviation, stating that it was a moment of great sadness and distress, especially with the military family, extended to the occupants’ families and felt by the entire population Cape Verdean.<\/p>\n

This accident was appointed as the third of the four aviation accidents recorded in Cape Verde, and the most tragic ever, the tragedy of Santo Anta\u0303o, which occurred precisely in the Ribeira da Torre valley, had been reported in the Jornal Horizonte on August 12 , such as \u201cO Dia da Trage\u0301dia\u201d and \u201cRibeira Grande de Luto\u201d.<\/p>\n
