Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) today urged the Government to declare a state of calamity in favor of the municipalities of Sa\u0303o Filipe and Brava, following extensive damage caused by the rains.<\/p>\n

In a press conference, the member of the PAICV National Council, Lui\u0301s Pires, highlighted that the city of Sa\u0303o Filipe was left in deep regret with works literally ending up in the sea, after the rains, as well as Brava Island, which had the isolated community of Faja\u0303 de A\u0301gua.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking into account the extent of the damage, PAICV urges the Government to declare a state of calamity for Sa\u0303o Filipe and Brava and to activate, as soon as possible, the emergency fund\u201d, asked the national deputy and former mayor of Sa\u0303o Filipe .<\/p>\n

Emergency plan<\/p>\n

According to the same source, it is necessary to activate an emergency plan, similar to what happened in Santo Anta\u0303o and Sa\u0303o Vicente.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe damage, particularly that of Sa\u0303o Filipe, exposed inconceivable flaws in the recent works carried out within the scope of the PRRA, which demonstrate a lack of technical rigor and blunders in planning the rehabilitation of that city, which is a national heritage site and which aspires to be included in the list of world heritage sites\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Avoidable mistakes<\/p>\n

These \u201cavoidable errors\u201d, as he said, led to the loss of large resources, the vulnerability of the city and threatened individual properties and assets of the municipality.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not conceivable that these works, inaugurated a few months ago, did not take into account the need for an efficient drainage system that took into account the characteristics of this city\u201d, indicated the national elected official.<\/p>\n

Lui\u0301s Pires warns, on the other hand, that what happened in these last two rains is \u201cjust a warning sign\u201d, so the Government’s visit to Fogo should be used to, together with the Chamber and other experts in the city, consider a quality drainage system, capable of avoiding even greater damage in the future, especially if the asphalt continues to be laid without respecting the orography of Sa\u0303o Filipe.<\/p>\n
