Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Movement for Democracy in Praia (MpD) was today against the salary increase at Banco de Cabo Verde (BCV). In a post shared on its Facebook page, signed by Alberto \u201cBeta\u201d Melo, president of the municipal commission for fans in the capital, the party reacted in this way to the news published in the newspaper A NAC\u0327A\u0303O no838 of 21 September, which reports on salary increases in around 17 and 18.4% for Governor and BCV administrators.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recent salary increase of the governor and administrators of Banco de Cabo Verde is highly questionable and deserves harsh criticism\u201d, Beta begins, writing in a post shared on his page and on the MpD Praia page.<\/p>\n

The Municipal Commission for fans in Praia is outraged by the aforementioned increases at the level of BCV managers, taking into account the economic situation experienced by the majority of families in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the majority of Cape Verdean citizens are facing economic difficulties and struggling to survive, it is unacceptable that those in power receive such substantial salary increases\u201d, they condemn.<\/p>\n

Act for the benefit of the people<\/p>\n

MpD Praia argues that it is \u201cimportant to remember\u201d that Banco de Cabo Verde is a public institution and that, therefore, it must act for the \u201cbenefit\u201d of the people.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe salaries of senior officials must be fair, reasonable and reflect the economic reality of the country. The decision to increase salaries by 17 percent (%) and 18.4% shows a troubling disconnect between the bank\u2019s leaders and the population they are supposed to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Furthermore, they also argue that the fact that there are \u201cadditional invisibles\u201d in the salary of the governor, O\u0301scar Santos, increases his total remuneration \u201ceven further\u201d, which, they claim, \u201cis even more disturbing\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransparency is fundamental in public institutions and it is necessary for citizens to have complete and detailed knowledge of the salaries and benefits of their representatives\u201d, they appeal.<\/p>\n

Affront to Cape Verdeans<\/p>\n

This \u201cexcessive\u201d salary increase, says the MpD in Praia, is an \u201caffront\u201d to Cape Verdeans who \u201care struggling to survive in a challenging economic scenario\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of increasing the salaries of senior officials, there should be a focus on improving the country’s general economic conditions and assisting those most in need\u201d, counters the MpD Municipal Commission in Praia.<\/p>\n

They also remember that it is the \u201cresponsibility\u201d of the leaders of Banco de Cabo Verde to \u201cact with integrity and in line with the interests of the people\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis disproportionate salary increase undermines public trust in the institution and raises questions about the priorities and values \u200b\u200bof its leaders. There needs to be transparent accountability and an immediate review of this decision to correct this unfair pay gap.\u201d<\/p>\n

Therefore, they have no doubt that this salary increase at BCV \u201cis an affront to Cape Verdeans\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ulisses says that the adjustment made is \u201cnormal\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, from New York, where he is on a mission, the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva considered the \u201cadjustment made\u201d in relation to salaries at BCV to be \u201cnormal\u201d, because, as he said, it makes sense for directors and advisors to earn more than the institution’s managers, who have \u201cadded\u201d responsibilities.<\/p>\n
