Cape Verde will start producing its own electronic documents in 2024 \u2013 Coordinator<\/p>\n

Carlos Albino, who was speaking to the press on the sidelines of the 5th Strategic Committee of the GESTDOC project, said that more precisely in the third quarter of next year, the country will produce its electronic documents, currently issued in Portugal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that, at the beginning of the second quarter of 2024, Cape Verde will already be able to produce its own documents here in the City of Praia at the facilities of the new and renovated Imprensa Nacional de Cabo Verde (INCV). I aim for the second quarter, but during the course of the year, Cape Verde will certainly be able to issue its documents\u201d, guaranteed the coordinator.<\/p>\n

As highlighted by Carlos Albino, this will be a \u201cvery important\u201d milestone for the archipelago, since it is an essential area that concerns the sovereignty of the State and Cape Verde will take a leap into the group of countries that produce their own documents.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should be noted that throughout the world there are many countries that do not produce their documents, it is a service that is provided by third countries, and there are few security document production factories in the world and Cape Verde will become one of these countries who produce documents for their citizens\u201d, he maintained.<\/p>\n

The GESTDOC project has been running for four years in Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau, with completion scheduled for January 5, 2024, however, Carlos Albino highlighted that due to some constraints caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequently the war in Ukraine , the work was conditioned.<\/p>\n

The person responsible emphasized that there is a need for a \u201csmall extension\u201d so that both can successfully complete the activities. In the case of Cape Verde, the works at INCV are yet to be completed, which has been delayed, however, the equipment is already in the country for installation.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, one of the functions of this strategic committee is also to present to the European Union, and all partners, the need to extend the project, so that we can complete this activity and also others in Guinea-Bissau\u201d, he indicated.<\/p>\n

One of the key activities, in Cape Verde, of the GESTDOC project, consists of the creation of a document personalization center that aims to produce the electronic passport, the national identification card and the residence permit for foreigners in the country in the National Press of Cape Verde (INCV).<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, according to Carlos Albino, the project covers three essential areas, in addition to document issuance: the civil identification chain and the reinforcement of border security. The latter two are underway in Guinea-Bissau and include the creation of a universal, computerized civil registration system, as well as an effective, computerized border control system at Bissau International Airport.<\/p>\n
