Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Culture and Creative Industries stated this Saturday that by honoring Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi and S\u00e9ma Lopi, justice is being done to batuque, fina\u00e7on and funan\u00e1, which still have a lack of recognition.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cToday is a day that we do justice to the culture of Cape Verde, to batuque, fina\u00e7on and funan\u00e1\u201d, said Abra\u00e3o Vicente, speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the bust of Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi, and the requalification works at the S\u00e9ma Lopi Cultural Center, formerly the \u201cCineteatro de Porto Baixo\u201d, in the municipality of Santa Cruz, in the interior of Santiago.<\/p>\n

\u201cHolding events and cultural activities are not enough to honor our culture. It is necessary to perpetuate it over time (\u2026) and inspire this generation so that they can see that whoever actually did it with consistency that Cape Verde recognizes\u201d, she noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cCape Verde has a historical debt to national figures, and in the case of the island of Santiago, and in the case of batuque, fina\u00e7on and funan\u00e1, we have a deficit of recognition from the Cape Verdean people themselves\u201d, continued the government official.
\nFor Abra\u00e3o Vicente, the tribute to the \u201cqueen of batuque and fina\u00e7on\u201d Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi is also a tribute to Cape Verdean women.<\/p>\n

In addition to the bust placed in front of the roundabout that gives access to Ribeira Seca and Achada Fazenda, Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi also lent its name and gained a moral in the same circular of this \u201ceminently agricultural\u201d municipality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a moment in which we recognize a great figure [Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi] and also a tribute to Cape Verdean women, because Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi, with her scarf tied around her head, with all her clothing, posture and all the work she she did during her life ends up being a journey equal to that of an ordinary woman\u201d, she said, adding that \u201cNha N\u00e1cia Gomi is the face of batucadeiras and finan\u00e7on nowadays\u201d.<\/p>\n

Regarding the attribution of the name S\u00e9ma Lopi to the Cultural Center, which houses the Sem\u00e1 Lopi\/Funan\u00e1 Interpretive Center, within the scope of the \u201c1 auditorium per municipality\u201d program, the government official explained that its objective is to be a small stage for artists not yet renowned and established artists can perform their first concerts and encourage and promote art at a community level.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cultural center is a space to value the local community, and the interpretive center is so that people can learn a little about the history and so that it can have dividends for the community. In other words, the interpretive center aims to consolidate the research we are doing around funan\u00e1 and to take it to another level, both nationally and internationally\u201d, he indicated.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, the Minister of Culture announced that both Sem\u00e1 Lopi and Ant\u00e3o Barreto (Santa Cruz), and Cod\u00e9 de Dona (S\u00e3o Francisco) will have their busts, having guaranteed that those of Orlando Pantera (S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o dos \u00d3rg\u00e3os) and Bibinha Cabral (Tarrafal) are already ready and will be delivered later this year.<\/p>\n

In turn, the president of the Santa Cruz City Council, Carlos Silva, who recalled that the municipality he heads has a \u201cstrong cultural heritage\u201d, argued that perpetuating the memory of Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi with the bust and giving the name Sem\u00e1 Lopi to the Cultural Center will help promote culture.<\/p>\n

As he said, taking into account that they aim to make Santa Cruz a tourist destination par excellence, he believes that the two projects materialized in partnership with the Government, now inaugurated, which join the funeral graves of the \u201cgreat figures\u201d of the municipality and the Church of S\u00e3o Tiago Maior, will help promote cultural, religious and scenic tourism.<\/p>\n

The two tributes \u201cfrom the people of Santa Cruz and Cape Verde\u201d observed by family members, in front of many residents and artists, take place within the scope of Culture and Communities Day, marked on October 18th, under the motto \u201cWe are Culture\u201d .<\/p>\n

Nha N\u00e1cia Gomi (Maria In\u00e1cia Gomes Correia), the woman with the famous phrase \u201cSima nu kre nu ka podi sta, mas sima nu sta nu ka podi Fica\u201d (As we want we can’t be, but as we are we can’t stay) found it in Batuco the way of explaining the world as he saw it.<\/p>\n

Considered the ‘queen of finason’, she was also well known as a storyteller. Much of her music was improvised in the moment.<\/p>\n

She recorded three albums and participated in many more as a guest. In 2005 she released two albums: ‘Finkadu na Raiz’, with batuque player Nt\u00f3ni D\u00e9nti d\u00b4\u00d4ro, and ‘Ku ses Mocinhos’.<\/p>\n

S\u00e9ma Lopi (Sim\u00e3o Tavares Lopes), who was born in 1941, was a simple farmer who became an excellent harmonica player and renowned funan\u00e1 composer.<\/p>\n

He is the author of several musical compositions, including \u201c\u00d4i, S\u00e9ma L\u00f3pi, c\u00f4rpu d\u00ed tch\u00f5, \u00e1lma d\u00ed Cr\u00edstu\u201d, having worked in the world of music with Carlos Alberto Martins (Katch\u00e1s), founder of Bulimundo, who recorded several of his compositions.<\/p>\n
