Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Cape Verdean Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, said today that he was surprised by the resignation of Anto\u0301nio Costa, who he considers to have played an important role in improving relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurprise, yes. Yesterday I spoke to him on the phone and reaffirmed what has been a very positive appreciation of our excellent relations, of partnership between Cape Verde and Portugal\u201d, he told Lusa, in Praia, at the entrance to a parliamentary debate.<\/p>\n

Ulisses Correia e Silva said that Anto\u0301nio Costa \u201cplayed an important role in recent years, as Prime Minister, in raising this level of partnership\u201d between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The Cape Verdean head of government chooses as the \u201chigh point\u201d of these understandings, the agreement to convert Cape Verde’s bilateral debt to Portugal into climate and environmental financing, an agreement \u201cthat has had a very large impact at an international level as a good example”.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are aspects to capitalize on in favor of our relations and particularly Anto\u0301nio Costa\u2019s very personal commitment\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister of Cape Verde also dismissed any fears about a possible impact of the political crisis on bilateral cooperation. \u201cNo, no, we have very resilient relationships,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

Relations \u201care independent of political cycles\u201d, added the head of Government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have had other cycles of governance over the years\u201d, but there is \u201ca strong partnership with Portugal and it will continue\u201d, he concluded.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the Portuguese Prime Minister asked the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to resign, who accepted it, after the Public Ministry revealed that the head of Government is the target of an independent investigation by the Supreme Court of Justice into lithium and hydrogen projects.<\/p>\n

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa called the parties to a round of hearings at the Pala\u0301cio de Bele\u0301m, in Lisbon, today and will meet with the Council of State on Thursday.<\/p>\n
