Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Verdean poet Jose\u0301 Lui\u0301s Tavares today lamented the \u201cgreat political tension\u201d in the country, regarding the lead in parliament of a proposal to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Ami\u0301lcar Cabral, considering the parliament \u201cunworthy\u201d of representing the people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this parliament is unworthy of considering itself a representative of these people\u201d, said the award-winning author to Lusa, during his visit to Praia, where today he presents a new work, about his 20-year career.<\/p>\n

Despite his thoughts and his importance for the country, Cabral should not be “deified”, but neither should he be “demonized”, he considered, stating: \u201cHe was a human being with his virtues, with his weaknesses, but with a liberating thought.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jose\u0301 Lui\u0301s Tavares said that he follows Cape Verdean politics from afar \u2013 he lives in Lisbon \u2013 and considers that there is \u201cgreat tension\u201d, the result of a very bipolar system, the absence of a third way, a context that leads people to silence, for reasons of survival.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is tremendous pettiness among the people who govern the country, always jealous of what can be autonomous, critical and liberating thinking,\u201d he said, considering that Cape Verde still experiences the \u201csingle syndrome\u201d, despite the one-party system having disappeared. for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no pedagogy of acceptance of difference, of acceptance of the other, of the fact that the world is multiple and varied\u201d, continued the 56-year-old writer, born in Tarrafal de Santiago, highlighting that pedagogy is needed to have cultural alternatives, political and ideological.<\/p>\n

The proposed resolution to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the leader of the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, on September 12, 2024, was presented by the Cape Verde African Independence Party (PAICV, opposition) and rejected by the bench parliamentarian from the Movement for Democracy (MpD, in power).<\/p>\n

The document received 32 votes in favor, of which 28 from PAICV and four from the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID, also in opposition) and 34 votes from MpD.<\/p>\n

In his declarations of vote, the deputy and president of PAICV, Rui Semedo, said it was a \u201csad moment\u201d in the history of the Cape Verdean parliament, while the parliamentary leader of the MpD, Paulo Veiga, explained that, legally, the resolution is the wrong instrument for this purpose, showing that it should be done through a bill, presented by the Government.<\/p>\n
