For his part, the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today recalled the singer’s ” vocation, dedication and determination ” and highlighted her “great proximity to African music and musicians”.<\/p>\n

Sara Tavares, diagnosed with a brain tumor, died today at the age of 45, in Lisbon, a family source told Lusa news agency.<\/p>\n

The news of the death was given by the television station SIC, stating that the artist was admitted to Hospital da Luz, in Lisbon.<\/p>\n

Over the last year, Sara Tavares had been releasing some new themes, after five years of silence.<\/p>\n

He made himself known in the 1990s on the television competition “Chuva de Estrelas”, on SIC, when he performed a song by Whitney Houston.<\/p>\n

Shortly afterwards he won the 1994 RTP Song Festival with “Chamar a Mu\u0301sica”, a theme by Rosa Lobato Faria and Joa\u0303o Oliveira, and with which he obtained eighth place in the Eurovision Song Contest for Portugal, says the source of this newspaper.<\/p>\n
