{"id":21655,"date":"2023-12-11T11:37:30","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T11:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/cape-verde\/all-news\/imf-representative-points-to-call-centers-as-a-sector-with-potential-for-cape-verde"},"modified":"2023-12-11T21:39:28","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T21:39:28","slug":"imf-representative-points-to-call-centers-as-a-sector-with-potential-for-cape-verde","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/cape-verde\/all-news\/imf-representative-points-to-call-centers-as-a-sector-with-potential-for-cape-verde","title":{"rendered":"IMF representative points to &#8216;call centers&#8217; as a sector with potential for Cape Verde"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The resident representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Cape Verde pointed to the area of \u200b\u200btelephone service centers (&#8216;call centers&#8217;) as an example of an area with potential for development in the country, to serve Portuguese-speaking countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Cape Verde has a level of education that would allow this: it is a sector that does not require large initial investments to establish itself, could serve the Portuguese market, of some other Portuguese-speaking countries and that certainly has all the conditions to develop. \u201d, said Rodrigo Garcia-Verdu, in an interview with Lusa.<\/p>\n<p>The person responsible explained the idea, after being asked what specific information technology services he considers could be created in Cape Verde, as a result of the government&#8217;s investment in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that this is not an area of \u200b\u200bspecialization of the IMF, Rodrigo Garcia-Verdu, however, drew a parallel with \u201csimilar economies\u201d that have developed call centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of them, Jamaica, is also an island state\u201d, with more population than Cape Verde, but with similar characteristics, he said.<\/p>\n<p>It is a country that also has a large diaspora and that, thanks to a good level of education, \u201chas managed to develop an important sector of &#8216;call centers&#8217; to serve mainly the United States market\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see the services economy as a sector with potential for Cape Verde\u201d, particularly in the area of \u200b\u200binformation technologies, in a country where the IMF highlights \u201cpolitical stability, compliance with laws and good connectivity\u201d as assets, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The fund&#8217;s first resident representative in Praia endorsed the Government&#8217;s investment in the technology sector, considering that it should be \u201cone of the sectors to diversify the economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the only one, but we see potential: we are following the Government\u2019s actions to support the sector\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The focus on digital development has been one of the mottos of the Cape Verdean Government, which is nearing completion of a technology park, built near Nelson Mandela International Airport, in the capital, Santiago Island.<\/p>\n<p>The project has the capacity to accommodate around 30 companies, includes areas for a data center, among other features, and reflects the ambition of creating 1,500 jobs (direct and indirect).<\/p>\n<p>Considered the \u201cheart\u201d of the country&#8217;s digital strategy, it also has a hub under construction on the island of S\u00e3o Vicente, a project that aims to transform the archipelago into a technological &#8216;hub&#8217; in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The project has support of 45 million euros from the African Development Bank (ADB).<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/cape-verde\">Cape verde<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Cape verde.
