Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The president of Praia City Council, Francisco Carvalho, today accused the Government of \u201ctrying to suffocate\u201d the municipality with its \u201clow political games\u201d and of \u201ccompeting\u201d with the municipality.The mayor made these accusations this morning during the V special extraordinary session of the Praia Municipal Assembly, which will analyze and debate the state of the municipality over the last three years, having considered that the actions of the Government of Ulisses Correia e Silva have been \u201c extremely serious\u201d and could cause \u201cgreat damage\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n

As the mayor from Praia recalled, the current council team supported by the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) won the 2020 local elections in a \u201cdemocratic and legitimate\u201d way, but the MpD \u201crefused to accept defeat\u201d and since so it has \u201ctried to suffocate\u201d the municipality.<\/p>\n

For Francisco Carvalho, this is an \u201cextremely serious\u201d situation, but it has not stopped the current team from working and continuing to do more for the residents of the country’s capital.<\/p>\n

He explained that in 2019, on the eve of the 2020 local elections, the Government supported by the Movement for Democracy (MpD) transferred around one million contos to the municipality, while the current chamber received only half of this amount.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the moment we arrived at the chamber, the MpD Government cut everything that was transfers in addition to what is mandatory by law such as the municipal financing fund where we do not have a program contract, we do not have extra financing, we only have a just over a thousand contos from the Ministry of Social Inclusion\u201d, he reported.<\/p>\n

Another situation that Francisco Carvalho considers \u201cserious\u201d is that at the moment the Ministry of Infrastructure is carrying out work on bathrooms and replacing ceilings in neighborhoods of the capital, interventions that, in his opinion, fall under the jurisdiction of municipal.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, he also said that instead of the president of the MpD presenting proposals and ideas for the future of the country, hope for Cape Verdeans and innovative projects, Ulisses Correia e Silva says that \u201cthe goal is to take over the Praia council\u201d .<\/p>\n

For the mayor of Praia, the MpD has played a \u201clow game\u201d and \u201cin a cunning way\u201d and is unaware of the damage it is doing to the mentality of young people, who are the future of the country.<\/p>\n

Representing the municipal bench of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, opposition), deputy Joa\u0303o Cabral made a negative assessment of the current council team, stating that the country’s capital is today in \u201caccelerated degradation, without ideas, without projects, without programs and with enormous losses\u201d that could \u201cbecome even greater\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the politician, illegal constructions \u201chave been increasing every day\u201d, the issue of posture and urbanity are \u201can illusion\u201d, the sidewalks \u201chave been taken over and robbed\u201d by street vendors and sanitation is in a \u201ccritical and calamitous phase \u201d.<\/p>\n

For his part, the leader of the PAICV municipal bench (power), Aquiles Barbosa, who devalued the opposition’s statements, highlighted that despite the difficulties faced in terms of the covid-19 pandemic, droughts, the war in Ukraine and also the Without collaboration from the Government, the state of the municipality \u201cis good\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, he explained that in the face of these obstacles, which \u201cnegatively conditioned\u201d the life of the municipality, the chamber managed to raise funds through its own internal means, but also through international cooperation to work and managed to solve a large part of the problems that afflict the capital of the country.<\/p>\n
