Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Government of Cape Verde today justified Tuesday’s abstention at the United Nations as \u201ca matter of coherence\u201d, in the face of a new resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201c For the sake of coherence regarding its initial position, Cape Verde voted in favor of the amendment proposals presented by the USA and Austria\u201d, but which were not integrated, so Cape Verde \u201cvoted abstention\u201d , reads a statement from the Government .<\/p>\n

The document states that the amendments aimed to include in the resolution a condemnation of the Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7, calling for the release of hostages and the opening of humanitarian corridors.<\/p>\n

\u201c The text of the resolution submitted by the Arab group did not take into account provisions relating to the condemnation of terrorist acts \u201d by Hamas, pointed out the Cape Verdean Government.<\/p>\n

The executive \u201ccondemns any and all forms of terrorism\u201d, \u201c recognizes Israel\u2019s right to defend itself, observing International Humanitarian Law\u201d and also recognizes \u201c the right of the Palestinian people to establish their State \u201d, he said in today\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

\u201c Two States living in peace and security, side by side, this is the solution that the Government defends\u201d , he pointed out, considering \u201c it is essential that everything is done so that bilateral and multilateral humanitarian aid continues to benefit Palestinian civilians \u201d.<\/p>\n

In this case, the Cape Verdean executive stated that he will \u201c continue to facilitate the transport of goods and equipment, promptly granting overflight and landing authorizations to aircraft committed to this effort \u201d.<\/p>\n

The draft resolution on Gaza, presented to the Assembly by Egypt, and co-sponsored by around 80 UN Member States, including Portugal, received on Tuesday 153 votes in favor, 10 against and 23 abstentions from the 193 UN Member States .<\/p>\n

Cape Verde had already chosen to abstain from the text adopted by the General Assembly at the end of October, which received the support of 120 countries and which called for an immediate, lasting and sustained humanitarian truce.<\/p>\n

At the time, the position heightened the political tension in Cape Verde, with the President of the Republic, Jos\u00e9 Maria Neves, saying that he did not understand abstention from humanitarian values \u200b\u200band accusing the Government of acting alone in matters of foreign policy, bordering on \u201c constitutional disloyalty\u201d in the relationship with the head of state.<\/p>\n
