Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The Cape Verdean President spoke out today against the country’s abstention in a United Nations resolution on the conflict between Israel and Hamas, approved on Tuesday by 153 of the 193 countries, as had been done in October.<\/p>\n

Jose\u0301 Maria Neves disagreed with the Government and said, in a statement, that Cape Verde’s vote \u201ccould never be abstention\u201d, taking into account \u201cthe magnitude of what is happening in the Middle East, with an escalation of violence that This has resulted in a scenario of absolute humanitarian catastrophe, already claiming more than 18 thousand human lives, 70% of which are children\u201d.<\/p>\n

The head of state said that, \u201cjust as happened in the vote on the resolution that aimed to open a humanitarian corridor in Gaza, so now\u201d, in the vote for a ceasefire, \u201cthe abstention vote by Cape Verde does not, in itself, , sufficient justification\u201d, highlighting that it is not recognized in the votes.<\/p>\n

Jose\u0301 Maria Neves said that he finds no justification, not even with \u201ca calm consideration of all factors, starting with the constitutional parameters and Cape Verde\u2019s external credibility\u201d.<\/p>\n

The head of state classified the conflict as a \u201c total collapse of the values \u200b\u200bunderlying the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law \u201d, which has, justifiably, \u201c disturbed the conscience of the international community and that of Cape Verdean society in particular \u201d .<\/p>\n

\u201c This is a catastrophe in its entirety ,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Cape Verdean President once again complained about political articulation on the part of the Government, in the name of the \u201cduty of institutional loyalty\u201d, something he has frequently complained about.<\/p>\n

The statement comes a few hours after publishing a message on the Internet with the same appeal regarding a meeting between the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, and the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, about which, he stated, he would like to have discussed ideas , previously, with the Government.<\/p>\n

The Cape Verdean Government today justified Tuesday’s abstention as a matter of coherence, due to the fact that the resolution (like October’s) does not consider \u201cprovisions relating to the condemnation of terrorist acts\u201d by Hamas.<\/p>\n

The draft resolution on Gaza, presented to the United Nations General Assembly by Egypt, and co-sponsored by around 80 countries, including Portugal, received on Tuesday 153 votes in favor, 10 against and 23 abstentions from the 193 Member States of the UN. The Week with Lusa<\/p>\n
