Africa-Press – Cape verde. <\/strong><\/span>The secretary general of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, power) reiterated today that the Cape Verdean judicial powers acted within the law in the extradition process of Alex Saab.<\/p>\n

Luis Carlos Silva made these statements at a press conference to react to statements by the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition), which accused the Government of involving Cape Verde in a \u201cmajor scandal that tarnishes the external image\u201d of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegarding the Alex Saab issue, we reiterate that Cape Verde is a democratic state of law, subject to the principles of separation of powers and no matter how hard they try they will not be able to reach the prime minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva\u201d, he declared.<\/p>\n

He reminded the PAICV that the Government does not order arrests, but rather that it can detain, but that it then has to hand over to the Courts, which, in turn, assumes, from then on, the supervision of the processes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this process, the powers acted within the law and in response to an international arrest warrant. The decision of arrest and consequent extradition was taken by the Cape Verde Court, in compliance with its international obligations and in full respect for the independence and autonomy of the powers,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

In this sense, he reaffirmed that the Government conducts foreign policy in \u201ctotal and serious coordination\u201d with the other powers and based on the Government program approved at the polls by the population.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that while the PAICV tries to discredit, Cape Verde received support from the World Bank, availability from the IMF for financing and was selected for the IIIrd Compact of the MCC.<\/p>\n

Luis Carlos Silva stressed, on the other hand, that, with its communication, the PAICV seems to suggest an alternative path, possibly an interference in Justice, something that, \u201cas is obvious, is unacceptable in Cape Verde as a rule of law\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis type of action is part of our past, a past of bad memory, and it is the MpD’s mission to ensure that absolute power never again finds space in Cape Verde. Finally, allow us to congratulate the agreement reached between the US and Venezuela, a positive step in international relations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He also asserted that the other issues raised by the PAICV are objectively an attempt to divert the focus of the national political agenda from the first lady’s salaries, highlighting that at a time when the whole of society is crying out for more information and more clarification on the topic, \u201cthe PAICV is the only one that seems to be okay with the illegal and improper use\u201d of public resources that \u201chappened during the Presidency of the Republic\u201d.<\/p>\n

For the MpD, he highlighted, this silence is a confession of this party’s partiality and the self-serving way in which it deals with the nation’s issues, clearly prioritizing its political-party interests to the detriment of the nation’s interests. The Week with Inforpress<\/p>\n
